Wangari Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977 to address the challenges of deforestation, soil erosion, and lack of water by the simple act of planting trees. Ecologist Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her years of work with women to reverse African deforestation. “It is the people who must save the environment.
